How to Sew a Simple Cosmetic Bag

Even beginner sewers can create a cute and usable cosmetic bag with some basic skills. Opting for an easy bag shape without too many bells and whistles allows you to produce a simple but still stylish pouch to stash your beauty products. Follow these straightforward steps for sewing success!

Pick Pretty, Pliable Fabric

Quilting cotton is an excellent choice for first-time bag sewing. It's durable, comes in limitless fun prints, and has a nice drape that's easy to work with. Medium weight home decor fabrics also sew up well. Purchase at least 1/2 yard to allow for pattern pieces and mistakes.

Select a Rectangular or Square Pattern

Skip complicated contours and curves for your first makeup bag. A basic rectangle or square pattern has fewer pieces to cut and seams to sew. Dissect the pattern and instructions before buying materials to ensure it's suitable for beginners.

Prepare Fabric and Cut Pieces

Before cutting, wash and press fabrics to preshrink and remove any chemical finishes that may interfere with thread adhesion. Once fabric is pretreated, carefully cut out all pattern pieces, adding 1⁄2 inch seam allowance. Transfer any pattern markings too.

Sew Side and Bottom Seams

With right sides facing, first sew the side seams using a 1⁄2 inch allowance. Finger press seams open. Then align and stitch the bottom seam in the same fashion. Backstitch over ends for strength. Leave the top edge open.

Box Out Corners

For a boxy bag shape, neatly flatten sewn corners and sew across the triangle tip, 1⁄2 inch in from point. Trim excess fabric. Repeat on remaining corner to "box it out" nicely.

Attach Handles or Straps

If adding handles or a shoulder strap, pin and topstitch them to outer fabric now according to pattern guides, reinforcing stitches for durability.

Edge Stitch Top Seam

Fold over the raw edge 1⁄2 inch to the inside then topstitch all around the top perimeter for a tidy finish. Add any closure hardware like magnetic snaps as final embellishment!
