How to Sew a Folding Cosmetic Travel Bag
A folding cosmetic bag is a great portable storage solution for organizing all your beauty essentials. The folding capability allows it to lie flat when not in use for easy packing, then pop open to access your items when needed. Sewing your own custom folding cosmetics case is simple with some basic sewing skills and tips.
Choose Foldable Fabric
The key to a successful folding bag is using a fabric with inherent flexibility. Some good options include:
Quilter's cotton - Prewashed fabric with nice drape
Lightweight canvas - Durable and machine washable
Double gauze - Soft fabric with crinkled texture
Medium to lightweight fabrics work best so the bag folds easily. Make sure to purchase enough yardage for the size bag you want to sew allowing for pattern pieces, folds and optional pockets.
Add Interfacing for Structure
While the main bag fabric needs flexibility, adding some lightweight interfacing gives the folded sections of the bag shape and structure. Mid to light-weight fusible interfacing is easiest to work with. Apply strips of interfacing to the pattern pieces that will form the folded sides and base of the bag.
Consider Bag Hardware
Think about if you want to include any hardware like zippered inner pockets, small cosmetic mirrors or key leash clips to accessorize the interior of your folding cosmetic case. Purchase these ahead of time so you can incorporate into your sewing steps.
Cut and Mark Fabric Pieces
Once you've selected a bag pattern, carefully cut out the fabric pieces, allowing generous seam allowances. Transfer any pattern markings indicating fold lines, pocket placement or strap positions. Tailor's chalk, tracing wheel or fabric marker all work well.
Sew Outer Bag Pieces
With right sides facing, pin and sew the outer fabric pieces together according to pattern guides, pivoting at corners and leaving an opening for turning. Clip curves, trim seam allowances at corners. Turn right side out and press.
Create Lining
Repeat to make the lining, but don't leave an opening. It gets attached to the outer bag after assembly so this hole isn't needed. Sew any inner divided pockets or hardware to one lining piece at this stage before joining the halves together.
Attach Straps or Handles
If your design calls for handles or a shoulder strap, attach them now using reinforcement stitching for durability when carrying heavier makeup loads.
Connect Outer and Lining
With wrong sides facing, insert lining into outer bag, matching side seams and raw edges. Pin then edge stitch all around the top opening to secure the two layers together.
Add Fasteners
Sew on any additional hardware like magnetic snaps, Velcro strips or zippers to keep the bag folded shut for storage and travel. Topstitch around the outer edges for a clean look.
There you have it - a custom folding cosmetic case to organize your beauty routine! Start with a basic bag shape and make it your own with fun fabrics and functional features for keeping your makeup tidy.
