How to Sew a Cosmetic Travel Bag
Sewing your own cosmetic travel bag is a fun and easy project that allows you to create a custom bag perfectly suited to your needs. With just some basic sewing supplies and skills, you'll have a stylish new cosmetics case in no time.
Choose Your Fabric
The first step is to head to the fabric store to select the material for your bag. When it comes to cosmetic cases, durable and stain-resistant fabrics work best. Good options include:
Canvas - Sturdy and machine washable. Comes in many colors and prints.
Quilted fabric - Provides nice structure. Often coated with water-resistant finish.
Oilcloth or laminated cotton - Waterproof and wipeable. Large range of fun prints.
Make sure to purchase enough fabric to cover your chosen pattern pieces, plus some extra to account for mistakes. Also pick up some coordinating thread.
Select a Pattern
Cosmetic bags come in all shapes and sizes. Decide if you want separate compartments, inner pockets, carrying handles or a shoulder strap. Purchase a pattern with the features you want, or modify an existing bag pattern to suit your needs. Simple rectangular or square shapes work well. Just be sure to size it appropriately for the amount of supplies you need to store.
Cut Out the Fabric Pieces
Once you have your fabric and pattern ready, carefully cut out each pattern piece, allowing room for 1/2 inch seam allowances. Use fabric scissors or a rotary cutter and mat for smooth edges. Cut two pieces for exterior fabric and two pieces for lining fabric to create a fully lined bag. Mark any guidelines printed on the pattern (such as pocket placement) using tailor's chalk or a fabric pen.
Sew the Exterior Pieces
With right sides facing, pin the exterior pieces together along the sides and bottom. Sew together using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Press seams open or to one side. Topstitch along the seams if desired for a professional look. Leave the top edge open for turning right side out later. Repeat to sew the lining pieces together, but leave a 4 inch opening along one side for turning.
Attach Straps or Handles
If your pattern calls for a carrying strap or handles, attach them now using more straight seams. Reinforce with extra stitching for durability when carrying a loaded bag.
Connect Exterior and Lining
With exterior and lining pieces wrong sides facing, slide the lining over the exterior so all raw edges align. Pin carefully then sew all around the top perimeter with a 1/2 inch seam to attach the two layers together.
Finish the Cosmetic Case
Pull the bag through the opening in the lining side so right sides now face out. Tuck lining inside, press edges and topstitch all around the top edge for a clean look. Sew closed the hole in the lining by hand or machine. Add any other final touches like a luggage tag or button closure.
And that's it - you now have a custom cosmetic bag ready for travel! Fill it with your beauty essentials or gift it to a fashionable friend. With the right fabrics, patterns and a bit of sewing creativity, you can create coordinating sets of makeup bags to suit every occasion.
