How to Make a Fabric Cosmetic Bag

A handmade fabric cosmetic bag makes a wonderful gift or personalized storage for all your beauty products. With some basic sewing skills and cute fabric, you can create a custom cosmetic bag to match your style.

What You Need

1/2 yard of main fabric

1/2 yard of lining fabric

Matching sewing thread

12-inch zipper (to match fabric)

Pens, clips, scissors, ruler

Sewing machine

Pins or fabric glue

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1. Cut two rectangles of both main fabric and lining fabric, each measuring 9" x 12". These will be the outer and inner pieces of the bag.

Step 2. Take the two main fabric pieces and pin the 12-inch zipper horizontally across the center, right sides facing. Sew into place along both long sides of the zipper tape.

Step 3. Unzip the zipper halfway and lay the lining fabric rectangles atop the main fabric, with right sides facing each other. Make sure zipper pull extends outwards.

Step 4. Sew all the way around the edges with a 1⁄2 inch seam allowance, leaving a 5 inch opening along one side of the lining for turning right side out later.

Step 5. Trim off excess zipper fabric close to the stiches. Clip corners at an angle to reduce bulk. Turn the bag right side out through the opening.

Step 6. Tuck in raw edges of opening and pin closed. Topstitch around the entire top edge of the bag and press flat with an iron.
