Crafting a No-Sew Cosmetic Bag
Don't let a lack of sewing skills stop you from creating a cute and custom cosmetic case! With some fabric glue and basic materials from the craft store, you can make a DIY no-sew makeup bag or toiletry pouch in no time.
We'll guide you through quick and crafty methods for turning fabric into a finished bag without needles or thread. Let's do this!
Pick Your Fabric
Almost any flexible, medium-weight cotton fabric will work well for a no-sew cosmetic bag. Consider:
Quilting cottons
Canvas
Decorative upholstery fabric
Fat quarters or fabric scraps
A half yard of fabric yields a nice mid-sized pouch. Make sure to coordinate colors between the exterior fabric and lining fabric.
Prepare Materials
You'll also need:
Fabric glue or fabric fusion web tape
Ruler and fabric scissors
Pencil and paper for pattern
Zipper - at least 6 inches
Interfacing (optional)
Use interfacing on just the outer shell or both layers for more structure. But a basic no-sew bag doesn't require it.
Measure and Cut Fabric
Decide what dimensions you want your bag. Common sizes range from 5" x 7" for small makeup bags, up to 10" x 12" for a large tote.
Cut two identical rectangles from both exterior and lining fabrics. Add 1" all the way around rectangles for seam allowances before cutting.
Create the Pattern
Make a paper pattern template with the following pieces:
Front and back rectangles
Side gussets - Rectangles the height of the bag sides x 2" wide
Strips for zipper tabs and binding
Use the template to cut all pieces from fabric. Transfer any pocket or embellishment patterns to trace onto fabric as well with pencil.
Install the Zipper
Apply a line of fabric glue along one long edge of each zipper tab. Center zipper on top edge of exterior piece, glue side down. Press in place.
Topstitch close to zipper teeth through all layers. Align and glue lining piece in same way.
Assemble the Bag
With fabric glue, adhere side gusset pieces to exterior and lining pieces, aligning all raw edges. For clean corners, clip excess bulk before pressing gussets firmly.
Apply binding strips over rough edges using fabric glue to bind them under neatly. Press all layers firmly after gluing to set.
Shape the Bag
To define the bottom, make diagonal clips across lower corners rather than boxing. Apply glue inside clipped corners and press together firmly.
Finally, insert finished exterior shell into lining piece with wrong sides facing. Edge stitch around top opening and press flat. Add any interior pockets wanted.
Once glue dries fully, fill your no-sew cosmetic bag with all your glam gear!
