Crafting a Chic Cosmetic Bag

A handmade cosmetic bag makes a thoughtful gift or a stylish addition to your own accessories. With some basic sewing skills and cute fabric, you can create a custom cosmetic bag to suit any taste. This easy DIY project will have you sewing your way to organization in no time.

Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have the necessary supplies:

Fabric - Choose a patterned cotton fabric you love with a nice weight and drape. About 1/2 yard should give you plenty to work with.

Thread - Select thread that matches the color of your fabric. All-purpose polyester thread works well.

Sewing machine and basic sewing tools - You'll need a sewing machine, scissors, straight pins, measuring tape, etc.

Zipper - Pick a zipper about 9 inches long so your bag can open wide. Go for metal teeth over plastic for durability.

Interfacing - Lightweight fusible interfacing adds structure and prevents stretching.

Cut Out Your Fabric

Start by cutting two rectangles of equal size from your main fabric. The size depends on the bag dimensions you want, but we recommend 11" x 15" for a nice mid-sized pouch.

Next, cut two more rectangles from interfacing in the same size to fuse to the wrong side of your main fabric pieces later on. This will give them more body.

You can add pockets or other details if you like by cutting additional fabric pieces now. One idea is to use a complementary fabric.

Sew the Side Seams

With right sides together, align the long edges of your fabric rectangles. Pin in place. Sew both pieces along the 15 inch sides using 1⁄2 inch seam allowances.

Press seams open when you're done sewing. Repeat with both lining and outer bag pieces.

Insert the Zipper

Now comes the fun part - installing the zipper! There are a few methods, but a centered zipper works nicely for this style of bag.

First, press open the seam allowances. Then, centered across the width of the bag, topstitch down both sides of the seam through all layers. This closes the base.

Position your zipper face down over the pressed seam. Zipper stops should extend past the stitching a bit. Pin then baste in place close to teeth.

With zipper foot attached, stitch as close as possible to zipper teeth from top to bottom. Repeat on other side of zipper tape. Check zipper function!

Shape the Bag and Finish

Fuse interfacing pieces to the wrong side of both outer and lining pieces according to packaging directions. This adds body and structure. Give the pieces a press with your iron afterwards.

With right sides still together, nestle outer and lining pieces into each other. Make sure zipper and seams align.

Sew around the outer edges with a 1⁄2 inch seam allowance, leaving a 4 inch opening along the bottom for turning. Clip corners before turning right side out through the opening.

Press flat, then topstitch all the way around the top edge. Stitch the opening closed and...ta da!

Fill your custom cosmetic bag with your favorite beauty essentials or give as a lovely homemade gift!
